Meridian Point for Migraines and Headaches
We’ve all been there: experiencing that splitting headache, sometimes due to dehydration, sometimes to stress…and we seek any possible relief from the throbbing or tension. The GB8 (Gallbladder 8) meridian point is an effective technique for such occasions.
Some meridian points can be challenging to self-massage due to body logistics. However, this particular point is accessible and effective in relieving tension and is one I’ve used for many years now. Massaging it can really help release the tight fascia around your skull, providing a soothing sensation and relieving the pressure.
How to Use This Technique:
- Find a Comfortable Position: Sit in a relaxed position.
- Position Your Hands: Place the heels of your hands just under your cheekbones and rest your elbows on your knees. This position helps you cradle your head properly, allowing you to fully relax and let the weight of your head rest in your hands.
- Locate the GB8 Point: The point is roughly located 1.5 inches above the apex of the ear, aligned with the centre line of the ear. This area may feel tender to the touch, which is a good indication you’re in the right spot.
- Massage Technique: With firm, but not hard, pressure, massage in concentric circles around the point. Allow your head to fully relax and trust your hands to hold its weight.
- Duration: Continue this massage for about 5 minutes, then rest. Sit up and take slow, deep breaths to settle any sensations. Repeat this process as needed.
This self-massage can alleviate some pressure in your head, offering a sense of relief. However, if you frequently suffer from headaches or migraines, it may be indicative of a deeper imbalance within your body. In such cases, a full session with a professional is recommended to address the underlying cause of the tension, which may stem from emotional disharmony or other factors.
